On the day of her Presenting, in front of the entire Byern Court, seventeen-year-old Cyrene Strohm's lifelong plans come to fruition when she's chosen for one of the most prestigious positions in her homeland—an Affiliate to the Queen.

Or so she thinks.

When Cyrene receives a mysterious letter and an unreadable book, she finds nothing is as it seems. Thrust into a world of dangerous political intrigue and deadly magic, Cyrene's position only grows more treacherous when she finds herself drawn to the one man she can never have...

King Edric himself.

Cyrene must decide if love is truly worth the price of freedom. Find out in this first book in USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde’s new Ascension series.

I am always up for a fantasy, so when I saw The Affiliate, I knew I had to read it. I am really glad I did too, because I enjoyed it! This is my first book by K.A. Linde and it will not be the last. Having just finished this first installment in the series, I am already desperate for the next book.

I liked the way Linde developed her story and how she combined so many elements to add depth to her story- she has created a caste system in which each member of society is presented and given a profession by the King himself. Cyrene has been chosen to become an Affiliate of the Queen, which is a very high and rare honor. However, the Queen is less than thrilled about this decision, as she is jealous of Cyrene, as Cyrene has caught the attention of King Edric. His attentions are not the only ones she's gained either, as King Edric has a younger brother, Kael. I am very intrigued by Kael's character, even though I do not particularly care for him at all. I am not overly concerned about this particular scenario developing into a love triangle, as Kael does some pretty unforgivable things where Cyrene is concerned.

I enjoyed the forbidden romance between Cyrene and Edric, but I wish it had been developed a bit more. Because of certain circumstances that arise, I had trouble believing whether the King's intentions towards her were honorable or not. Had we seen more of them together forming an attachment instead of infatuation and attraction, I think that would have helped clear up any doubts I may have had.

Fantasy can be such a tricky genre to write and I have to say I appreciated Linde's straightforward, easy to understand vernacular. Sometimes books can get so bogged down with detail and world-building that it feels like a chore to read through and get to the good stuff. I never felt that with this one. I do have a lot of questions, but I am confident Linde will address those as the series continues.

I do not want to say much more for fear of spoilers, but Linde has created a very promising start to her new fantasy series and I am looking forward to seeing the direction she takes these characters and how their lives will become intertwined once again going into the future.

USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde is the author of The Affiliate, the first book in the Ascension Series.  As a military brat, she traveled the world with her family, imaginary friends, and ever-increasing supply of books.  She has spent much of her life dreaming up new worlds and characters and forcing them into uncomfortable, usually life-threatening scenarios.  After graduating from the University of Georgia with a masters degree in political science, she began spending every waking hour putting those characters onto paper.
When not writing, she spends her time dancing, collecting paperbacks in the hopes of filling a Beauty and the Beast style library one day, traveling to visit her friends who live all over the country, and still reading anything she can get her hands on.  She currently resides in North Carolina with her husband and two puppies, Lucy and Riker, where she is hard at work on her next novel.

  1. I hadn't heard of this book before today, but it sounds fun. I would want the romance to be a bit slow too, but at least there is a romance. I'll look into this one asap!
    Great review, Jess!

  3. Glad this one was quite a good read! And that it wasn't bogged down. It's sad to encounter fantasy you thought you'd loved, but then find it too heavy on detail and world-building that leaves the characters all but forgotten. I'll definitely have to pick this one up! lovely review!
